The Society of Authors invites applications for grants from the Authors' Foundation. The half-yearly closing date for the award is 30th April 2011. The following one will be 30th September.
The Authors' Foundation assists writers of fiction, poetry and non-fiction. Any published author working on a full-length book for a British publisher who needs funding (in addition to the advance) for research, travel or in order to 'buy time' is welcome to apply. Grants vary according to the author's particular needs, but are unlikely to exceed £3,500.
Without a contractual commitment by a publisher you may apply so long as you have had at least one book published and there is a strong likelihood that your next book will be published.
