Sixty Poems for Haiti

Sixty Poems for Haiti is the brainchild of Elly Niland and Maggie Harris whose idea it was to have a concert to raise funds to help in the reconstruction of Haiti following the earthquake of 12th January 2010. The collection is the 'book of the concert': the concert held in June, raised over £800.00.

The collection comprises poems from authors ranging in age from 12 to 89 and located in the West Indies, UK, Ireland and Europe. Some contributors are seasoned - even famous - poets; some beginners; the only brief that was given to authors was to send a poem for Haiti. Some have responded directly, or elliptically, to the traumatic events on and after the earthquake of January 2010; others have sent a selection from their recent work as gifts to the people of Haiti.

I am humbled and pleased that my poem No Time has been included in this inspiring collection. You can read my contribution on my website: www.shangwe.com/biography.htm under the Poetry Section.

All proceeds from the book will be donated to the Lambi Fund whose mission is to assist the popular, democratic movement in Haiti. Its goal is to help strengthen civil society in Haiti and it takes its lead from the peasant and women's organisations with which they collaborate, on the premise that the Haitian people understand how development is best achieved in their country.

Sixty Poems for Haiti is published by Cane Arrow Press, who publish new and historic poetry from Trinidad & Tobago and the literature and philosophy of the West Indian diaspora in Britain.

A copy of the book is available from Maggie Harris http://www.maggieharris.co.uk/ and costs £9.00.
