I am currently reading A Creative Guide to Exploring Your Life written by an award-winning psychologist Holly Barlow Sweet and a professional photographer Graham Gordon Ramsay. So far, I have been inspired and motivated as I read and participate in the exercises that reveal alot about your life. I was looking for something like this to read over the festive season, especially as I am emerging into a new dimension of writing and art/photography so this was an ideal choice.
This is not a book review, since I have not finished the reading, but I can recommend the book based on what I've read so far, which is Chapter 1: The Journey of Self Discovery, Chapter 2: The Value of Self Expression and Chapter 3: Turning Points and Key People. Other Chapters include: Gender and Self; Race and Ethnicity; Self in Historical Context; Meaning in Our Lives; Alternative Views of Self; Self in the Future; Creating a Mixed-Media Portrayal of Self; Final Reflections.
The book includes imaginative exercises and examples that use the power of photography, art and writing tools for self-discovery. It provides clear and accessible guidance on how to explore different parts of your identity: take a photography of yourself in a role you don't typically play; draw a visual timeline of your life and consider its key turning points; explore your sense of place in history by writing about a major historical event that has changed your life. Exercises are accompanied by searching questions for self-reflection, and are complemented by examples of each exercise to provoke ideas and inspiration.
If you are curious about your life and identity, this book offers a dynamic and enjoyable way for you to explore different aspects of your life. It also features additional guidance for teachers, counsellors, and other professionals who wish to explore this material in a group context.
